France links tobacco prices to inflation and plans new tax on HnB consumables

Tobacco prices in France will soon be indexed to inflation as the government seeks to discourage smoking in a country where cigarettes kill more than 200 people a day and cost the state billions of euros in health and social costs every year.

Under the recently introduced Social Security Financing Bill (PLFSS), part of the 2023 draft Budget that was presented to the Council of Ministers, a pack of cigarettes that now sells for €10.15 will cost €10.65 next year and €11 in 2024.
