Canada’s health minister has new powers to wield in battle over nicotine pouches

Canada’s parliament has adopted legislation that will give the federal health minister sweeping new powers to regulate nicotine pouches, only days after Health Canada cracked down on two nicotine pouch brands not authorised for sale in Canada.

New powers – slipped into the budget implementation bill, which was adopted by the parliament and received royal assent on 20th June – will allow health minister Mark Holland to regulate Imperial Tobacco Canada’s Zonnic and any other nicotine pouches in Canada authorised in the future under Health Canada’s natural health products regime.
