US FDA’s new rule bolsters youth tobacco safeguards without any major disruption

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has introduced a new rule that increases age restrictions on tobacco and e-cigarette sales, continuing its mission to protect young people from tobacco addiction.

Starting from 30th September, retailers will be required to ask for photo identification from anyone under 30 purchasing tobacco products, which at the federal level includes e-cigarettes. This small but significant change increases the age of the current requirement from 27. Additionally, vending machines selling these products will be prohibited unless under-21s are restricted from accessing them, tightening the previous under-18 age restriction.
