Dutch citizens’ initiative for birthdate ban on nicotine products moves to parliament

In the Netherlands, the citizens’ initiative to achieve a nicotine-free generation – which aims to ban the sale of all nicotine-containing products to consumers born on or after 1st January 2012 and has collected more than 40,000 signatures – has been declared admissible.

On 4th July, the House of Representatives (lower chamber of the parliament) approved the report of the Committee on Petitions and Citizens’ Initiatives. This initiative, launched in 2022, therefore meets all procedural and substantive requirements and is now entering the next phase. It will be placed on the agenda of the standing committee for Health, Welfare and Sport of the House of Representatives for consideration.
