Health experts accuse EC of ignoring science in new tobacco tax proposal

The European Commission’s plan to overhaul EU tobacco taxation has triggered a backlash from public health groups, industry and member states alike.

In an open letter to the Commission, a coalition of 83 public health experts and organisations warned that taxing novel tobacco and nicotine products could harm public health. They accused the Commission of ignoring scientific evidence showing non-combustible nicotine products pose significantly fewer risks than cigarettes.
