New Japanese prime minister likely to move ahead with heated tobacco tax hike

Japan’s next prime minister, Sanae Takaichi (pictured), has not expressed support for reversing a planned heated tobacco tax rise but may push back against stricter anti-smoking regulations.

Set to be confirmed within weeks as Japan’s first female prime minister, Takaichi is a member of one of the pro-tobacco lobby groups in the ruling centre-right Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and campaigned on tax cuts.
