The UK passed an amended version of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill at the end of November, imposing new restrictions on the two industries.
The bill, which passed in its second reading, was little changed from the version proposed earlier this year under the previous, Conservative government, and yet opposition was led by members of parliament (MPs) from the former administration, not least of whom was the new Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch. Opponents focused on tobacco smokers’ rights, and the rights of potential future smokers, rather than the impact on vape users. And some warned that Northern Ireland’s unique legal position post-Brexit might impede the new legislation.
