Measures are ‘being considered’, but no change is likely in Australian HnB policy

Australian authorities have not announced any change in policy on heated tobacco in the run-up to a new national tobacco plan. This has left the status of heat-not-burn (HnB) products unchanged since the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA) decided in August 2020 to severely restrict the sale of such products by limiting them to prescription-only smoking cessation tools.

The National Tobacco Strategy 2022–2030 is being drawn up following feedback from consultations involving stakeholders. Until it is in place the existing National Tobacco Strategy 2012–2018 remains valid.
