Shocked MEPs accuse Swedish medic of promoting snus in speech to committee

A Swedish medical expert’s presentation on the use of snus has been strongly criticised by members of the European Parliament (MEPs), who accused him of promoting a harmful nicotine product.

Fredrik Nyström, a professor in the faculty of medicine at Linköping University, told the Subcommittee on Public Health that statistics showing falling consumption of cigarettes in Sweden and Norway, alongside increasing snus use, showed transitioning from tobacco to snus was an effective harm reduction method.
