What could EU elections mean for the tobacco industry? Analysis of over 100 parties’ views on novel products

Around 370m European citizens are called to elections (6th to 9th June) to elect the 720 members of the European Parliament (MEP).

These elections take place amid the ongoing revision of both the tobacco control framework and the tobacco taxation framework at EU level, making these elections one of the most important (if not the most) of the past few years for the tobacco industry.

To anticipate future scenarios, it is key to examine the general views on novel tobacco and nicotine products of the national political parties that will appoint the next 720 MEPs, as these will shape the next Tobacco Products Directive (TPD).

This report analyses the position on novel products of over 100 EU-affiliated political parties across the 27 EU member states to understand the aftermath of the EU elections and their impact on tobacco policies.
